The MapBiomas Award, an initiative that celebrates science, innovation and the use of data in the conservation and sustainable management of natural resources, has revealed the winners of its 6th edition. This year, the award highlighted exceptional works that address everything from water erosion to ecosystem fragmentation and the quantification of carbon emissions.
The Winners:
- 1st Place, General Category: Determination of water erosion in the Neshuya sub-basin, Ucayali region - Moisés Leonardo Ascencio Sanchez (National Institute of Agrarian Innovation)
- 2nd Place, General Category: Vulnerability of an urban ANP: Mapping the loss and fragmentation of wetlands in Chorrillos - Sally Torres Mallma and Anna Torres Mallma (Ricardo Palma University)
- Honorable Mention, General Category: Quantification of Carbon Emissions from Forest Fires - Nelly Cabrera, Edgar Arana and Ricardo de la Cruz (National Forest and Wildlife Service)
- 1st Place, Young Category: Spatio-temporal changes in land cover and use in Huaraz and Independencia - Cristhian Vega Moreno and Marilu Espinoza Felix (National University of San Marcos)
- 2nd Place, Young Category: Ecological niche analysis and landscape fragmentation in the Nanay-Amazonas basin - Camilo Muñoz Rimachi and Sergio Campos Torres (Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos)
These works demonstrate the transformative potential of using MapBiomas data to generate innovative and applicable solutions to current environmental challenges.
